Nebraska Big Ten Tour heads to Ann Arbor, Michigan

Every football season brings about new changes, new venues, and new teams.  However for the last century those changes have been minimal for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but the 2011 season is drastically different.  This year the Nebraska Cornhuskers have joined the Big Ten, one of the nation’s most historic and prestigious conferences.  Along with switching conferences Nebraska is faced with 11 new opponents that it must learn, and above all else travel to.

Nebraska fans love their football and travel as well as any of the other top tier programs in the county but this year it is truly something special to be a part of.  No more short horribly boring drives to visit Lawrence or Manhatten Kansas ikn the middle of no where, no more dealing with the rude and crude fans of Mizzou and Colorado.  The 2011 season ushers in a new era of football and a new era of football venues.  Now as part of the B1G Nebraska travels to some of the best college football stadiums around like Ann Arbor, Michigan and Happy Valley.  Stadiums and fan bases that are built on the same traditions just like the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Husker fans are known not only for their ability to travel well but for the hospitality when opposing teams travel here.  That is exactly what makes the Huskers and the Husker Nation so drastically different than any other team out there.  Just ask Notre Dame from the early 2000s and find out what it felt like to have their stadium taken over by the Sea of Red.  Granted there are very few away games left this season but none bigger than the inaugural trip up North to visit Michigan in the Big House.

Briggzie Big Red Blog Season Opener

Howdy folks it has been a long productive offseason for your Nebraska Cornhuskers.  So where do we start in terms of leading up to the first game of the season.  By now all of you know that the Huskers have finally moved on from Big XII to join the now 12 team B1G Ten.  This move could not have come at a better time for the Huskers with the Big XII looking like it will be losing a few more members, most notably Texas A&M and Oklahoma.  This situation has given rise to a new nickname for the Longhorns, “Conference Killers,” first the SouthWest Conference and now the Big XII.  I will highlight more on the move to the B1G as conference play gets closer but let us take a look at the upcoming game this Saturday.

This Saturday’s game against UT-Chattanooga is going to be a little bit lopsided but will give Husker Nation a good taste of what to expect this year.    UTC is a FCS opponent that does boast a lot of talent and should not be taken lightly, especially with what happened last year against South Dakota State.  Although I want to say SDST was a little bit of a fluke and a trap game last season, but unfortunately that game gave other teams the base to stop the T-Magic Show.

Chattanooga is a formidable opponent with good skill positions, they have 7 pre-season all conference candidates.  However, I highly doubt that they will be able to match up very well with the Huskers speed and strength.

Nebraska’s offenses, has been kept under wraps all season, even with what we saw in the Spring Game, (which was a very vanilla version)all we know is it will be up-temp, fast, attacking, and simple.  It will most likely resemble a form of Oregon, Oklahoma, and Kansas circa 2007 style.  Outside the Husker football program no one truly knows what to expect and I doubt this weekend will show us any more than a little bit of variance from the Spring Game.  I would expect a little bit faster pace than the spring game with a little bit more formations but other than that it is anyone’s guess.  I would expect to see our base shotgun set, I and Power I formations, as well as wildcat, and pistol formation.  What the offense will look like and how it will be executed are two different things, no matter what it looks like Saturday it will be executed with SPEED.  The Huskers have just about as much speed as they ever have at the skill positions on offense.  Jamal Turner, Aaron Green, Braylon Heard, Ameer Abudallah, Kenny Bell,  and Tim Marlowe not to mention Taylor Martinez all have explosive speed and game breaking ability.  Couple that with reliability of Rex Burkhead, Brandon Kinnie, and Kyler Reed this Husker offense has big play threats at every offensive skill position.  How that speed translates quality of plays is another story, but too much speed means a lot of quick scoring drives for the Huskers on Saturday.

I will say it right now, the Blackshirts will be absolutely destructive this year.  The Husker Defense is the furthest along it has been at this point of the season since the Pelini Bros took over.  What does that say about how they will play on Saturday, “Watch out Mocs, it won’t a good day in Lincoln for you.”  The Blackshirts have three All-American Candidates at each level of the defense, Jared Crick, Lavonte David, and Alfonzo Dennard.  Crick will most likely see double teams all day but that leaves t he door open for Meredith, Steinkuhler, and either Martin or Ankrah to have a huge day.  With the return of a three man linebacker core expect the defense to be extremely stout against the run.  Although Dennard is out with a leg muscle injury, Evans and Andrew Green will step up and have big days.  With the amount of pressure that will be put on the UTC’s quarterback the secondary will have an easy day with at least 2 picks and several pass break ups.

Replacing the NCAA’s most accurate place kicker in history won’t be easy but I am not seeing the need for several 40+ yard field goals in this game.  The biggest threat of special teams this week will be on the kick return side.  Odds are Jamal Turner and Tim Marlowe will be back deep on kickoff return, I wouldn’t be surprised to see one taken back to at least the Moc’s side of the field.  Punt returns are where this game is going to get out of hand quickly, Jamal Turner should handle that responsibility with ease in this game.  We may even see a glimpse of the past with him to bring us back to the days of Johnny Rodgers and Bobby Newcombe.

Although Chattanooga will be severely out matched in this game, the Huskers cannot take them lightly.  I doubt that they will do that, but it just needs to be reiterated.  The second and third string offenses and defenses will see a lot of playing time in this game.

Final score prediction 63-3 Nebraska gets its first victory of the season.

Check out this video to a get a little bit pumped up for the season!!

Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Iowa State Cyclones

First off I would like to apologize to my readers for not posting anything about the Mizzou game last week.  However I feel that this weeks analysis of the game will more than make up for it.  This week the Huskers face a Big 12 nemesis, Iowa State.  I don’t have to remind you what this game means in regards to the Big 12 North race, but I feel it is necessary to remind you of what happened last year in Lincoln.  For the first time in recent memory the Huskers had more turnovers than they did points.  It seemed like every time they hit the 5 yard line it was a rule that they had to drop the ball.  It became so embarrassing to watch, it was almost laughable.  This year the Huskers bring a different attitude to the game than normal.  Of course they want to redeem their 8 turnover performance from a year ago, and I have little doubt they won’t achieve that.  The Nebraska coaching staff, at least publicly, seem to have a bout of amnesia when talking about last years debacle.  I can almost guarantee that inside the locker room its been a different story.

The Huskers are coming off of a very dominating performance against the Missouri Tigers.  A 24 point first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game.  The Tigers were suppose to have a very stingy defense, but Helu didn’t get that memo.  He had a career high 304 rushing yards and set the NU single game rushing record with that performance.  Not taking anything away from Helu’s performance but he and the Offensive line definitely stepped up when Martinez got hurt.  Iowa State in comparison to Mizzou’s defense is mediocre at best.  That coupled with the fact that the Huskers have been amazing away from Lincoln will make for a very long day for the Cyclone defense.  It seems to me that Martinez and Helu are having some sort of “Anything you can do, I can do better” battle on offense.  Martinez’s 280+ rushing yards against K-State was an unbelievable performance.  Only to be dwarfed in comparison to Helu’s game last week.  So I am expecting to see several touchdowns and long runs from  T-Magic and Helu in this game, there is nothing better for a team than a little friendly rivalry amongst players.  That is of course  if Martinez can overcome his ankle injury that has plagued him this week in practice.  But interesting enough if Martinez cannot play there are two QBs ready to play.  Zac Lee has apparently slide into the role of the #2 QB behind Martinez.  Word on the grapevine is that Lee has gotten a lot quicker in comparison to last year and is presumably the best passer out the bunch.  With Lee’s passing and improved rushing ability, I don’t expect too much of a drop off if Martinez is not allowed to play.  If Green gets the nod instead it could be very interesting.  Green who probably has the strongest arm out of the bunch as not looked so good when he has played lately but I still have faith in the kid, who Husker Nation wanted to be the “guy” last year.  Green is faster than Lee, throws harder just not as accurate, but if he can over come the fumble –itis he has had lately he could fill in just fine.

Defensively the Huskers have been playing lights out lately, no pun intended to OK State and Gabbert.  The Blackshirts have stepped the intensity level in recent weeks and have been laying some hard hits on opponents.  I do not expect this week to be any different, although the challenge of containing the Iowa State offense is a little bit different than the previous games.  The past few games NU has only been hurt by non-running quarterbacks scrambling and getting away from pressure for medium to big gains.  This week presents a little bit different scenario, in regards to the fact that they will be playing against a dual threat quarterback that likes to tuck and run.  I am expecting to see a bit of a tweak in terms of the defensive game plan.  Most likely that will mean a little bit more man to man coverage in the secondary and a spy to contain the Cyclone QB scramble.

The Huskers have an away game this weekend, and this game is about redemption from last year’s performance.  I expect the Huskers to come out ready to go, and lay the whooping down on Iowa State especially since the Cyclones play there worst games at home, outscored a lot to a little.  I don’t think the Huskers need any help in the motivation area, but I would not be surprised if I see sticky tac on the sideline to help hold onto the ball.

Husker News: Briggzie Big Red Blog

Colorado Buffalos vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

This is it, the final regular season game of the Huskers’ final Big 12 Tour.  This game seemingly didn’t have too much importance a month ago, but things change so quickly.  The Buffs are on a roll as of late since the firing of their head coach.  Nebraska is on a downhill skid and need to find a spark to change course ASAP.

Nebraska’s week has been filled with issues, rumors and injuries.  This gives them a little time to focus on the task at hand.  Issue of the coaches, specifically Bo and Carl Pelini, having a bad temper on the sideline have been seemingly corrected.  Tom Osborne and Chancellor Pearlman have stepped in and corrected the sideline temperament that both coaches showed last weekend.  Bo and Carl were just stepping up to fight for their players, there is nothing wrong with that.  However, it’s the manner in which that was done that may have been a bit over board.  Rumors that T-Magic quit the team were squashed on Monday.  Nevertheless that is a distraction that the Huskers do not need right now.  According to sources, it was nothing more than a rumor and Taylor never intended to quit.  For our starting quarterback, someone who is suppose to be a leader on the team, wanting to quit because he got yelled at, shows a lot about his lack of character.  That aside the rumor has been silenced at least for the time being and T-Magic is still a Husker for now.  Injuries are just the latest issue to plague the Huskers this season.  Taylor Martinez’s stubbed toe and injured ankle have all but stopped the formerly potent Husker offensive attack.  Back up Zac Lee is still injured with an unspecified arm injury from his hand to his elbow which is preventing him from playing. Now Cody Green will have to step in and make his second start this season against the Buffs.  As rumors go in college football, former 5th string QB and former scout team leader Ron Kellogg III is actually expected to step up and be the new number two behind Cody.  If the rumor holds any truth then we should also see him step in and get several snaps in this game as well.  Another injury that aids in the stopping of the Husker offense is the loss of Niles Paul.  Granted he has had his issues with fumble and dropped passes, he is still one of our biggest playmakers on the field and has been one of the biggest reasons the rush offense was running wild earlier this season.  Losing both Taylor and Paul are big issues, but its time that someone steps up and shows the country and Husker Nation that we can win soundly without the two of the biggest players on the team.

The Buffs have a stout rushing defense that will leave little room for error against the Huskers.  We need a big day from Green, Helu, and Burkhead just to get the offense going.  Last year Cody was a much stronger runner than he has been this year.  He needs to step up, make the right reads, and carry the weight of a Big 12 North Title on his shoulders.  The Buffaloes ‘  pass defense has left a little to be desired, so the Huskers should be able to take to the air to get some yards, that is of course easier said than done with Green at QB.

The Buffs offense has been rolling lately, and that is most likely attributed to their rushing attack.  The rushing offense of the Buffs has been on fire lately and that is attributed to Running Back Rodney Stewart, who has had over 300 yards total in their last 2 games.  We all know the weakness of the Blackshirts has been their rush defense.  However, the Blackshirts have been playing very strongly in all facets of the game in the last few weeks.  I expect the Husker D to come out and play lights-out like they did all last year and hope that the Husker Offense doesn’t mess the game plan up.

This game is a great way to end both the Huskers and Buffaloes final Big 12 season.  Where one team makes it to the Big 12 title game with a win and the other makes a bowl game with a win.  Both teams have their backs against the wall and are capable of winning, but the biggest question is who will prevail with more emotion, motivation, and desire to win.  The Huskers are playing for a Big 12 North crown this week, but after last weeks performance I do not know if that is a huge motivational factor.  Lets just hope for Huskers sake that it becomes a factor and the teams decides to send the seniors out with a win in Lincoln.  Where as the Buffs 5-6 and are playing for the opportunity to go to a Bowl game, which that fact scares me more than anything.  The Buffs realize that without a win their season is done and what could be more motivating than that.  The Buffs will most likely dig deep, play with reckless abandon and attempt to dash their rivals Big 12 Title dreams, all the while making sure their season doesn’t end in Lincoln.

Let me know your thoughts on this game.
