It is finally here… and actually here a week earlier than in years past.  This year the Omaha Summer Arts Festival takes place this weekend, June 10th through the 12th.  No matter what your interest is there will be something at the Summer Arts Festival for you.  Are you a fan of paintings, sculptures, and other amazing forms of art? Great there will be plenty there to capture your interest, if not don’t worry about it there will be fun for the kids, amazing food, and great musicians performing.

For starters there are two main stages and a variety of informal staging areas scattered alongside the Gene Leahy Mall.  The Omaha Summer Arts Festival will no doubt bring you three days of nonstop musical entertainment featuring dozens of local, regional and national artists.  The genres include everything such as blues, jazz, Latin, reggae, gospel, alternative rock, disco, and much more.

As we had said before The Omaha Summer provides something for everyone in the family, especially the little ones.  Here are just a few of the Children’s Events your kids can partake in.

•A Children's Fair, offering a variety of hands-on activities—The theme for 2011 is “Art-eology: Can You Dig It?!? ”

•A Family Entertainment Stage full of music, dancing and a whole lot of fun!

•A Young Artist Exhibition, which showcases the fantastic artwork created by school children in grades six through 12.

•A Trash Barrel Art community project will adorn the streets of the Festival.

Sometimes art isn’t for everyone but no need to worry about that at the Summer Arts Festival.  There will be a wide variety of tasty treats at the TasteFest, which is a very popular spot for many festival-goers. With booths spread throughout the site, the Festival offers everything from your traditional festival food to a simple snack, dessert or cold beverage.

The Festival welcomes Omaha based restaurants like Dante Pizzeria Napoletana, Omaha’s first restaurant specializing in Neapolitan pizza. Not to mention Asian-Fusion dishes from O Dining,  natural and organic offerings from Blue Planet Natural Grill, and much much more.

Aside from the normal festivities taking place at the Summer Arts Festival there will also be numerous special events.  For instance the Omaha Public Library Book Sale, will take place on the corner of 14th and Farnam Streets. There will also be special crafts for both children and adults, library card registration, technology petting zoo, and sidewalk chalk art by Matt Seeley.  There will also be OPPD Refrigerator Art Project, Speed Painter Tim Decker will perform, an amazing Dog Show from the Nebraska Kennel Club and the Council Bluffs Kennel Club, plus several more special events.
