Downtown Gift Card On Sale Now!

Redeemable at a Wide Variety of Downtown Businesses

Downtown Omaha is staying true to its roots.  The downtown area has gotten a much needed modernized facelift thanks to the area around TD Ameritrade Park, called North Omaha Downtown or NODO for short.  That does not mean Downtown Omaha has forgotten what has made it such a unique place.

Downtown Omaha has and always will be a destination for Omahans and visitors alike.  Not just because of the historic Old Market, Museums, or other cultural events, rather because of the people.  Downtown Omaha has such a wide variety of unique shops and restaurants that it brings people from all walks of life into one place at one time.  No matter who you are or what your background is there is definitely something for everyone to appreciate in Downtown Omaha.

One of the most popular draws about Downtown Omaha is the unique shopping.  Most of the malls in America house the roughly the same stores and big national if not global companies.  Shopping in Downtown Omaha is a little bit different.  Most of the shops are locally owned and operated and have been for the last several decades.  It would be a safe bet to say that there are not many places in Nebraska or the US that you could buy an old school vinyl record, walk a few feet buy a hand rolled cigar, walk a few more feet and buy designer clothes.  The shops in downtown Omaha truly have something for everyone.

The Downtown area is also littered with amazing restaurants and eateries.  From fine dining, to Mexican, to pasta, to French, anything your heart desires can be found in Downtown Omaha.

Why spend your time walking around a mall that is not unique or even that much different than the other mall just a few miles away.  Why not spend your time walking around an area that is as unique as it is historic.  While you shop or eat downtown you are also helping your local small businesses and make sure that they stay locally owned for many years to come.

What better way to gift the gift of fun, food, and shopping to a friend than through the Downtown Gift Card.  The Downtown Omaha Gift Card is the first of its kind that allows recipients to redeem its value at a wide variety of Downtown Omaha’s restaurants, bars, retail and service outlets, event venues, attractions, museums, art galleries, and hotels.  Currently, the gift card can be redeemed at over 65 businesses with more being added every day.  Click here for the complete list of redeeming merchants or go to www.omahadowntown.org.Order your Downtown Gift Card today and let the fun BEGIN!!

The new gift card are available online at www.omahadowntown.org The cards are available in any denomination between $10 and $500, and operate like most gift card programs.  The Omaha Downtown Improvement District Association (DID) oversees the sale and distribution of the gift cards.

Interview with Sound of Music Star

The Rose theater in Downtown Omaha is happy to bring an iconic production to Omaha.  That production is a worldwide musical sensation known as “The Sound of Music.”  This amazing musical made famous by Julie Andrews and the depiction of the epic musical on the silver screen.  The Sound of Music has had the ability to touch lives and inspire people for nearly a half century.

One of those people that have been inspired by “The Sound of Music,” now finds himself playing the part of Captain Von Trapp.  Expedoodle recently sat down with Kirk Vaughn-Robinson, who is playing the role of Captain Von Trapp.   If Kirk Vaughn-Robinson sounds a little bit familiar, he should. He played the role of Monsieur Lefevre and the Fire Chief in The Phantom of the Opera, which was on stage in Omaha for several years.  Aside from being a well accomplished actor on stage, Kirk’s singing ability has also opened doors for him in the world of Opera.  Playing roles in some of the most well known musicals such as the West Side Story, Damn Yankees, My Fair Lady, and Don Quixote has been a lifelong dream of Kirk’s since he was a child.

With Kirk’s size and stature, if you didn’t know that he was an accomplished actor and artist, you would swear that he was a superb athlete.  Although he was quasi-forced into athletics as a child, his heart and soul had always been with the arts.  One of the biggest influences that caused his interest in music and art were his parents.  His mother always had a knack for painting and other forms of art.  Having the strong foundation in the arts from his parents, no doubt helped Kirk’s love for the arts become what it is.  Aside from encouraging parents, The Sound of Music actually played a role in Kirk’s love for acting as well.  Growing up as a kid and watching the movie of The Sound of Music, no one really knew the impact that would have on his life.  Memorizing songs and singing along with the Von Trapp children really fueled his passion for singing and acting, as well as his creativity and inspiration to become an artist.

Kirk is not only an amazing actor and singer, he is an accomplished artist as well.  He certainly has a high level of skill when it comes to creating masterpieces with his hands.  Starting in July at the Artists Cooperative Gallery in Omaha, Kirk will have an exhibit featuring a few of his bronze sculptures.  Kirk is a finalist in the Artist’s Cooperative Gallery’s Emerging Artist Contest, and he would love to have your help, support, and votes for his art.  Aside from being a sculptor, Kirk is also working on several paintings that he hopes to have in several galleries within the Omaha Metro area very soon.

Although being an accomplished artist and actor, Kirk still finds time to appreciate many other things in life.  From watching movies, to being an advocate for the different styles of art, to going for a run and appreciating the beauty that the world has to offer.  Kirk sees art in everything that surrounds his life. He possesses a true passion and appreciation for all that is involved in the arts.  Watching movies and seeing how much detail goes in to the make-up of those productions, and just simply appreciating the amazing special effects.  He also understands that art, no matter its form, is subjective and that allows it to appeal to everyone from the straight forward styles to the abstract.  In appreciating everything life has to offer, he understands that to truly be happy you must pay attention to your dreams and listen to the desire of your heart.

Be kind, be honest, be flexible, be gracious and thankful for everything you have in your life.

With booths spread throughout the site, the Festival offers everything from your traditional festival food to a simple snack, dessert or cold beverage.

Sound Of Music: A play for all Seasons!

The Sound of Music continues to be one of those musicals that stands the test of time. It conveys a message to people of all ages that is as relevant today as it was back then.  Life always presents itself with challenges and sometimes those challenges are more difficult to work through depending upon who and what is involved.  Love and respect for your fellow man and heritage is a strong and present underlying theme of “The Sound of Music.”  With this strongmessage of love, not to mention perseverance, people can accomplish freedom and their goals against all odds.

For many individuals, The Sound of Music will forever be near and dear to their hearts. Whether it is the music, story line, characters, where you first saw it or who you first experienced it with, remains a special connection. For me, I like to think of The Sound of Music as a gift from my dad. He took our  family to see the movie when I was a child. This no doubt was a big thing, as I heard The Sound of Music had an "intermission". I know!  I am sure my parents were wondering if my sister and I could sit through something this long. The minute the production began and I heard the music, that was it,  I immediately fell in love with everything about The Sound of Music!  I do not think I moved at all and I did not even want to get up during the intermission! The music, the children, the story,  the beautiful scenery, Maria and the Captain, and yes, even the convent (my catholic upbringing), all have left me with a heartfelt connection. However, just like in The Sound of Music where events beyond ones control can turn tragic and then into something beautiful, this was to be the last film our dad took us to, as he suddenly passed away. So even today, whenever I watch The Sound of Music (and I have seen it what seems like a million times) or hear one of the many infamous musical pieces, it takes me back to a beautiful time in my childhood and in those moments, all is right with the world once again.

With songs such as “Edelweiss”, "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and “Do-Re-Mi,” this final collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical! When Maria is dispatched from the convent to serve as governess to the seven children of the Von Trapp family, her arrival is met with resistance. But, Maria’s soaring spirit and love for music is a winning combination that helps the family to unite as they face the threat of a Nazi-occupied Austria.

Give your children and family the gift and memories that will last a lifetime...See and Experience
