Taste of Omaha 2011

For the last 13 years Taste of Omaha has grown exponentially.  This year Taste of Omaha happens this weekend, June 3rd through the 5th.  It has since inception been the place for local businesses and restaurants to get their delicious food in front of thousands of people who quite possibly never tried it before.

Aside from the wonderful food that will be showcased, Taste of Omaha is very much a community event.  People from all over the metro head down to Lewis and Clark Landing for fun, food, festivities, and musical entertainment.  This year will no doubt follow the same formula that has made the previous Taste of Omaha’s so successful.  With so many amazing festivities happening it is hard to narrow it down to just few.  There will be live and free concerts all weekend long, starting with Omaha’s own Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand Impersonators, Sebastian Anzaldo and Sharon Owen.  Not to mention several other performers and singers.  Taste of Omaha is not just about food and music; it is also about fun for the whole family.  There will be rides and games for the kids to play, not to mention magicians and an exotic animal show.

It is finally here… and actually here a week earlier than in years past.  This year the Omaha Summer Arts Festival takes place this weekend, June 10th through the 12th.  No matter what your interest is there will be something at the Summer Arts Festival for you.  Are you a fan of paintings, sculptures, and other amazing forms of art? Great there will be plenty there to capture your interest, if not don’t worry about it there will be fun for the kids, amazing food, and great musicians performing.

For starters there are two main stages and a variety of informal staging areas scattered alongside the Gene Leahy Mall.  The Omaha Summer Arts Festival will no doubt bring you three days of nonstop musical entertainment featuring dozens of local, regional and national artists.  The genres include everything such as blues, jazz, Latin, reggae, gospel, alternative rock, disco, and much more.

As we had said before The Omaha Summer provides something for everyone in the family, especially the little ones.  Here are just a few of the Children’s Events your kids can partake in.

•A Children's Fair, offering a variety of hands-on activities—The theme for 2011 is “Art-eology: Can You Dig It?!? ”

•A Family Entertainment Stage full of music, dancing and a whole lot of fun!

•A Young Artist Exhibition, which showcases the fantastic artwork created by school children in grades six through 12.

•A Trash Barrel Art community project will adorn the streets of the Festival.

Sometimes art isn’t for everyone but no need to worry about that at the Summer Arts Festival.  There will be a wide variety of tasty treats at the TasteFest, which is a very popular spot for many festival-goers. With booths spread throughout the site, the Festival offers everything from your traditional festival food to a simple snack, dessert or cold beverage.

The Festival welcomes Omaha based restaurants like Dante Pizzeria Napoletana, Omaha’s first restaurant specializing in Neapolitan pizza. Not to mention Asian-Fusion dishes from O Dining,  natural and organic offerings from Blue Planet Natural Grill, and much much more.

Aside from the normal festivities taking place at the Summer Arts Festival there will also be numerous special events.  For instance the Omaha Public Library Book Sale, will take place on the corner of 14th and Farnam Streets. There will also be special crafts for both children and adults, library card registration, technology petting zoo, and sidewalk chalk art by Matt Seeley.  There will also be OPPD Refrigerator Art Project, Speed Painter Tim Decker will perform, an amazing Dog Show from the Nebraska Kennel Club and the Council Bluffs Kennel Club, plus several more special events.

Sound Of Music: A play for all Seasons!

The Sound of Music continues to be one of those musicals that stands the test of time. It conveys a message to people of all ages that is as relevant today as it was back then.  Life always presents itself with challenges and sometimes those challenges are more difficult to work through depending upon who and what is involved.  Love and respect for your fellow man and heritage is a strong and present underlying theme of “The Sound of Music.”  With this strongmessage of love, not to mention perseverance, people can accomplish freedom and their goals against all odds.

For many individuals, The Sound of Music will forever be near and dear to their hearts. Whether it is the music, story line, characters, where you first saw it or who you first experienced it with, remains a special connection. For me, I like to think of The Sound of Music as a gift from my dad. He took our  family to see the movie when I was a child. This no doubt was a big thing, as I heard The Sound of Music had an "intermission". I know!  I am sure my parents were wondering if my sister and I could sit through something this long. The minute the production began and I heard the music, that was it,  I immediately fell in love with everything about The Sound of Music!  I do not think I moved at all and I did not even want to get up during the intermission! The music, the children, the story,  the beautiful scenery, Maria and the Captain, and yes, even the convent (my catholic upbringing), all have left me with a heartfelt connection. However, just like in The Sound of Music where events beyond ones control can turn tragic and then into something beautiful, this was to be the last film our dad took us to, as he suddenly passed away. So even today, whenever I watch The Sound of Music (and I have seen it what seems like a million times) or hear one of the many infamous musical pieces, it takes me back to a beautiful time in my childhood and in those moments, all is right with the world once again.

With songs such as “Edelweiss”, "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and “Do-Re-Mi,” this final collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical! When Maria is dispatched from the convent to serve as governess to the seven children of the Von Trapp family, her arrival is met with resistance. But, Maria’s soaring spirit and love for music is a winning combination that helps the family to unite as they face the threat of a Nazi-occupied Austria.

Give your children and family the gift and memories that will last a lifetime...See and Experience

New Realities an Omaha Old Market Favorite

It is the time of year where the Old Market is buzzing with people looking for that unique and special gift, or something for themselves.  There are tons and tons of specialty stores in the Old Market each store with its own unique style.  One such store is New Realities!!

New Realities, now on street level instead of its previous location in the Passage Way, is a wonderful surprise for shoppers. The store features a variety of holistic, spiritual and uplifting surprises.  Some of New Realities’ most popular items are their long line candles that come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and scents.  As you walk around you will notice the slight sound of beautiful relaxing music.  The music not only helps relax you but also has the ability to soothe your soul, and if you like it enough it is available to purchase.  If life is challenging you a little bit more than usual then some of their motivational tapes may help you turn over a new leaf.  Crystals and stones that are sold there are great pieces of décor but others feel that the crystals and stones may have some hidden powers that just need to be unlocked.  Dream catchers and figurines are just a few of the other types of products that are sold there.  As for clothing there are not many stores in Omaha that offer the same type of style that New Realities does.  There is something for everyone, especially to those who aren’t interested in the spiritual world.  If you are looking for something a little less spiritual then some of the toys may be right up your alley.  New Realities offers a wide variety of artwork and cards for various occasions.  Their jewelry is as unique as the store itself is, from mood rings to necklaces and bracelets they will have something to suit your style no matter what it is.  As for relaxation methods other than music they offer incense, scented oils, oil burners, and incense burners.  Tucked away on the shelves you will find hard to find authors, audio books, rare collectibles and hidden treasures.  The store itself is locally owned and operated, that small store feeling of family is very welcoming to each and every patron that visits the store.

If you are more of a computer shopper check out their website, www.newrealtiesonline.com.
